Sediment experts across Europe are being urged to lobby national negotiators to ensure sediment issues are included in the draft EU directive on soil protection in negotiations later this spring.

Some member states have included the sediment issue in proposed amendments which will be discussed by member state representatives and by the European Parliament in its filtering process. "I was able to include the sediment issue among the proposed amendments that the Italian negotiator will present next March," Paolo Bazzoffi of the CRA-Agricultural Research Council in Italy told members of the Sednet network. "To have success, your effort is necessary (indispensable) to persuade the negotiators of your country to present amendments that are synergic with the Italian proposals."
